Terms of use
In force as of 30 October 2026
This English version is provided for information only; in case of discrepancy, the French version prevails.
These terms of use (the "Terms") govern access to the filmatters.org website and its services, published by Filmatters, SAS (see the legal notice). They apply to anyone who uses the site. Creating an account requires accepting them by ticking the box provided for that purpose; using the site without an account also constitutes acceptance.
1. Services
Filmatters is a cinema atlas: searching and exploring films by shot, colour and composition, articles and research work, creative tools and workshops. The site can be browsed free of charge, without an account. A free account lets you save shots and collections, which remain private: Filmatters publishes no content from its users. Some workshops are paid (article 3). Filmatters may change, add or withdraw services. The equipment and connection you need remain at your own expense.
2. Account
Accounts are open to people aged 15 and over. An account is personal, except for the facilitator account of a paid workshop (article 3): you provide accurate information, keep your password secret and are responsible for the use made of your account. Report any unauthorised use to contact@filmatters.org. You may have your account deleted at any time by writing to that address from the account's email address. An account with no login for 3 years is deleted, after a warning by email one month before.
3. Paid workshops
Paid workshops are currently offered to organisations (cinemas, libraries, educational institutions, associations, etc.) under a contract. Each workshop is purchased separately and gives access to that workshop only. The organisation accesses it through a facilitator account, opened in the name of a person who runs the workshop and used by them in front of a group: participants, minors included, do not need an account. The organisation is responsible for the use of this account and for respecting the participants' rights, in particular the image rights of the people filmed. A workshop may be subject to usage limits, for example a number of generations per day and per account, set out in its specific conditions. The purchase of a workshop is governed by the general terms of sale and by the workshop's specific conditions (price, content, length of access, number of users). Until the general terms of sale are published, these elements are set out in the contract concluded with Filmatters. In case of conflict, the specific conditions prevail over the general terms of sale, which prevail over these Terms. Nothing in these Terms limits the rights that the law grants to consumers.
4. Rules of use
Without the written consent of Filmatters, you may not:
- systematically extract or copy the content or the database of the site, in particular by means of robots (other than search engines), or query its API outside the site;
- use this content or this database to train or evaluate an artificial intelligence model;
- share access to a paid workshop beyond what the purchase provides for.
You may not either disrupt the operation of the site, circumvent its security or access measures, use someone else's account, or enter unlawful content or other people's personal data in searches or workshops.

5. Suspension and termination
In the event of a breach of these Terms, abusive use or a risk to the security of the site, Filmatters may, depending on the seriousness, restrict access to a feature, free or paid, suspend or delete an account, or block access to the site, including by technical means. Except in an emergency or a serious breach, a reasoned warning precedes the measure and you may respond to it. A suspension caused by a breach by the organisation gives no right to a refund. You may challenge a decision by writing to contact@filmatters.org.
6. Intellectual property
The site: the texts, articles, visualisations, software, graphic elements and the Filmatters brand belong to Filmatters or to their authors.
The database: Filmatters built the site's database (films broken down into shots, annotations, metadata, search results), which is protected by the database producer's right (article L. 341-1 of the French Intellectual Property Code). You may consult it and quote elements from it for personal, research or teaching purposes, crediting "Filmatters (filmatters.org)". Any other reuse, in particular commercial, requires written consent.
The films: each film keeps its own status: public domain, free licence stated on its original platform, or protected work of which short extracts are reproduced for analysis and teaching. The rights in these works remain with their holders; Filmatters grants none.
Your creations: what you make with the tools and workshops (videos, dubbings, edits, exported images and videos) belongs to you, and Filmatters claims no rights in it. You may share it on a non-commercial basis; commercial use requires the consent of Filmatters for its own elements. You remain responsible for respecting the rights in the films your creations contain, according to their status. A "made with Filmatters" credit is welcome.
7. Automated results and artificial intelligence
Searches, annotations and some workshops rely on artificial intelligence models (for example, the intertitles of the Boîte à lumière are generated by Mistral AI). Their results may be inaccurate, incomplete or inappropriate. Review them before sharing them: you are responsible for the use you make of them.
8. Liability
Filmatters does its best to keep the site available and accurate, without being able to guarantee that it is free of interruptions or errors; it may be interrupted, in particular for maintenance. Some tools keep your projects in your browser: they are lost if you clear its data or change device, and Filmatters cannot recover them. Links to and content from third-party sites (Wikimedia Commons, Internet Archive, etc.) are the responsibility of those sites. To the extent permitted by law, Filmatters is not liable for indirect damage or for the use you make of the site; nothing limits its liability for gross negligence or wilful misconduct. You indemnify Filmatters against any third-party claim arising from your creations or from a use of the site contrary to these Terms. To report unlawful content or an infringement of your rights, see the legal notice.
9. Personal data
The data processed, cookies and your rights are described in the privacy policy.
10. Changes to these Terms
Filmatters may change these Terms to keep up with changes to the site or the law. Adding or withdrawing a service or a workshop does not change these Terms: each paid workshop has its own specific conditions. The date at the top shows the version in force, and the version you accepted is kept with your account; this record is proof of your acceptance, unless proven otherwise. A significant change is announced to you by email or on the site at least 30 days before it comes into force; if you refuse it, you may have your account deleted. A minor correction (wording, links) applies without notice.
11. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by French law. In case of disagreement, first write to contact@filmatters.org to seek an amicable solution. Failing agreement, the dispute is brought before the competent courts; between professionals, those of Paris.
12. General provisions
These Terms are written in French; in case of discrepancy with a translation, the French version prevails. If a clause is declared void, the others remain applicable. Not enforcing a breach does not waive the right to enforce it later. Filmatters may transfer these Terms and the accounts to another entity, in particular if its activity is taken over, without reducing your rights.
